Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area

Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area

The Big South Fork National River and Recreation area expands 125,000 acres across the Cumberland Plateau, and boasts miles of scenic gorges. The area is also rich for its natural and historical features, and has been developed to provide a number of outdoor activities for visitors.  The river also features custom horseback riding trails for pleasure trail riding, hunting trips, anniversary rides, overnight pack trips, and can be large or small groups.

Things to do at Big South Fork

Hiking
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area has over 150 miles of maintained hiking trails available for your enjoyment.  Trails range from short, one mile loops to long multi-day hikes through the rugged backcountry. Download Trail Maps

Camping
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area contains five developed campgrounds which are intended to meet the needs of almost any camper visiting the park. See the Camping Fees.

Horseback Riding
Horseback riding has become one of the most popular things to do at the Big South Fork. There are over 180 milesof horseback riding trails inside the National Park. See the Trail Guide

Mountain Biking
It is becoming one of the most popular activities at the Big South Fork. The park has a brochure guide for mountain bikers that features complete trail descriptions and rules of the trail.

Whitewater Paddling
The Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its main tributaries, the Clear Fork, North White Oak and New River offer visitors a variety of whitewater paddling opportunities.  Get complete information on the access points and run descriptions on their Web site.
